Jun 8, 2021 | Salcombe

After the past year, we’re all sick of zoom calls. The novelty wore off long ago and some proper recovery time is not only well needed but well deserved at this point. In this blog post, we’ll look into why Salcombe is the best place for a catch-up weekend in Devon.

Let’s be honest with ourselves, this year has been rough. That’s an understatement in reality, with the growing number of articles reminding us just how bad our stress levels have gotten. And with the thought of just having a weekend to relax seeming more and more like a distant memory, the last thing we want right now is more time cooped up at home. But as lockdown restrictions are ever so slowly being lifted, now is the time to start planning that end of year catch up with friends, so it’s not left to the last minute.

Weekend holiday in the UK

With international holidays out of the picture for the foreseeable future, if you are looking for a weekend break, we are forced to try and find the perfect destination within the confines of the British Isles. Whilst at first a weekend holiday in the UK may sound like we might miss out, a lot of people underestimate the amount of natural beauty we are spoiled with right in our own home.

Free time is something that we’re all short on right about now, so if you live around the Bristol or Exeter areas, travelling across the country for a long weekend isn’t exactly an option, which leaves us in the southwest. Fortunately, the best spot for the long overdue catch up might have been under our noses this entire time.

Best place for a weekend break in the South West

Luckily for us, a weekend break in South West England is perfect for those looking to kick back, relax, and spend some quality time with their friends. We are blessed to live in a place that is not only packed full of gorgeous beaches and beautiful landscapes but is also full of rich cultural significance and history, and no area epitomises that more than Salcombe and the wider Devon area.

weekend in Devon

The best part about a weekend in Devon and the Salcombe area is that you really can please everyone: it’s family-friendly, there are beach locations, rural locations, spots for those who love to be active and spots for those who really don’t! There’s something for everyone and no matter where you end up the one constant is that you won’t ever be bored.

What to do in Salcombe

This question is simultaneously really easy to answer and almost impossible at the same time. The best response is just “What do you want to do during your weekend in Devon?” For us, the idea of lounging about with some friends and enjoying some well-earnt quality time sounds perfect right about now but that might not be your cup of tea.

Luckily for you, the opportunities are endless, especially when you take into consideration services like our very own Luxe packages you could have a boat moored on your own private dock ready to take you out onto the water if you so wish! The southwest does the seemingly impossible by striking the balance between luxurious fine dining and the rural, back to nature, outdoors experience.

Here are some of the activities that you can do in Salcombe if you are looking for more active holidays for your weekend in Devon:

  • Sailing: One of the preferred activities in Salcombe and it’s perfect for discovering the coast and visiting hidden coves and more secluded beaches.
  • Walking: There are plenty of walking routes to explore the area and the stunning coastline on foot. Here are 3 circular walks that we love, but if you want other options, have a look at the South West Coast path website.
  • Stand up paddle-boarding: SUP is great for discovering the coastal views that surround the estuary and its coves, especially during sunny days.
  • Electric bikes: Perfect for moving around Salcombe and even going a bit further away to explore the coastal trails.
  • Swimming: Probably the best way to do a bit of exercise during the hottest days. If you like wild swimming, try Soar Mill Cove, a sheltered bay that you can reach by foot or kayak.

Who do you bring for your weekend in Devon?

Again this one can be whatever you want, the southwest is the perfect place for the whole family, but we think sometimes the best thing possible is sneaking away for a weekend for a well-deserved catch up with mates. Imagine this: a weekend together with some friends who you haven’t seen in months now, a luxurious location perfect for relaxing, everything managed for you to minimise stress and having the most gorgeous scenery as a backdrop to it all. Now we might be a little biased, but doesn’t that sound good?

Some time away and relaxation is something that is very much needed around this time and where better to relax than poolside enjoying the view over Salcombe’s historic estuary. Then head into the historic town for an evening meal in one of the many top-quality restaurants that the southwest has to offer. There’s everything from the classic local chippy to fine dining here, so we’re sure that there will always be something for you!

In conclusion, as a holiday destination the southwest ticks all the boxes, no matter what it is you’re looking for you can find it here, nestled somewhere in the beautiful south Devon countryside.
