They have been winning awards every year for the past 5 years, their latest achievement being a 3-star rating where 25 experts unanimously agreeing that the product tastes divine. This year Salcombe Diary even went one better to be included in the Top 50 Foods in Britain! And if you taste just one flavour – honeycomb – you will understand!
And Salcombe Dairy Ice-cream has earned some air miles! Not only is it on the menu at the Dorchester Hotel in London, it flies as far as New Zealand and Singapore on both countries national airlines!
Prince Charles the Prince of Wales and Camilla Duchess Of Cornwall visited Salcombe on July 11th 2011 and we were there to witness it! Not only did they have a pint in the local, Camilla tried the Salcombe Dairy Ice-cream as pictured!
Exporter of the Year
Starting out in the 1970s, family business WK Favis & Sons saw the market for its fresh-caught crab and lobster shrink in the recession, but then a new market opened up for it in China.
This has resulted in a time of rapid growth, which saw it win the title Exporter of the Year at the Western Morning News Business Awards 2013. They currently export between 8 – 30 tonnes of live crab to China every week! Wow!
Huge congrats for this great achievement in a business that takes such hard work and commitment no matter what the weather.
Yours truly has won an award for the awesome crab that is caught by Salcombe day boats, landed on the harbour walls then cooked and handpicked in the crab factory on Fish Quay. The handpicked Salcombe crab received at gold award at Great Taste 2012! Pat on the back for us 🙂
On 7 December 1939, a few months after the start of World War II, the Samuel and Marie Parkhouse (the name of the Salcombe lifeboat at the time) went to the aid of the SS Louis Sheid, a 6,057 ton Belgian steamer. This had picked up 62 survivors from the SS Tajandoen which had been torpedoed by Günther Prien’s U-47 but was now in trouble herself after hitting rocks near Thurlestone. It took the lifeboat crew two journeys to Hope Cove to land the survivors of the torpedoed ship, but the Louis Sheid’s own crew eventually got ashore after it ran aground in Bigbury Bay. Coxswain Edwin Distin (a survivor of the 1916 capsize) was awarded the RNLI Silver Medal for his seamanship during this rescue. The remainder of the crew were awarded bronze medals.
Four years later Distin was himself awarded a bronze medal when, on 4 December 1943, he rescued eleven people from a salvage craft off Start Point.
On 8 January 1992, the Baltic Exchange II went to help the MV Janet C which was adrift without power near Start Point. The crew managed to get a line across and held the 1,200 long tons (1,200 t) coaster off the rocks for three hours until a tug was able to take over the tow. Coxswain/Mechanic Frank Smith was awarded a bronze medal for his courage, seamanship and determination during this service.
On the Sharpham Estate they are producing some extraordinary wines! Their Sharpham Dart Valley Reserve 2013 is an off-dry white with a light, fresh character. It was a double winner at the Sommelier Wine Awards – Gold and Best Wine by the Glass.
Not only that, they were selected for The Times Newspapers Top 100 Wines for Summer! Only 40 minutes drive away, we highly recommend a visit to the vineyard to sample delicious wines and cheeses, all produced on the beautiful estate.
The wonderful Eileen Donovan won the Salcombe Citizen of the Year 2014 – huge congratulations! She is the most bubbly, caring and thoughtful person we know. Having worked at the local Salcombe Pre-School l for over 40 years, Eileen has been a big part in the lives of the Salcombe children and parents over the years. Eileen also supports many in the community who might otherwise feel lonely and unable to manage some of life’s challenges. She tirelessly gives her time and energy to others (and has some wonderful stories of her life growing up in Salcombe!)
The Victoria Inn, right smack bang in the centre of Salcombe, and run by Liz and Tim Hore, has seen serious improvements since they took over the pub in 2008. They really have invested so much time and energy and it has paid off being finalists in various awards over the years. However, in 2014 they hit the big time getting a GOLD award from Taste of the West and they have won this years Best Family Friendly Dining Experience in the Devon Life Food & Drink awards!
