Cottles Quay Overview

If you are looking for the highest level of interiors with a nod to the industrial, a place in the centre of Salcombe and right on the waterfront, then Cottles Quay is for you.

An engineering feat, this one time garden centre has been transformed into the epitomy of cool. Industrial style concrete, metal and brickwork form the basis of this house, but they are cleverly married with the soft touches of contemporary furniture, a brilliant colour palette and modern artwork.

Sitting right on the waterfront, you have poll position with views over the Shadycombe creek, the fish quay and over to Snapes Point. Accessed by Thorning Street (just next to the Salcombe jewellers) you are right in the artisan centre of town and only a short flat walk to the shops and restaurants.

The slipway leads to a running mooring which guests have permission to use with small boats. Paddle boards can be hired to enjoy exploring the beautiful harbour, or even for the newspaper/croissant run in the morning for those feeling brave! The creek is tidal so be aware that access is only around high tides.

Leading in from the huge courtyard, there are two buildings; the main house sitting right on the waterfront, and the boathouse set at the top of the slipway. This split in accommodation is a perfect set-up for two families sharing Cottles Quay, or a family with independent teens happy in their own space.

Entering the main house on the ground floor, you’ll find the kitchen, dining and comfortable sitting areas. The large glass window slides open to allow the fresh air to pour in. And a side door leads out onto the Gin Bar – a balcony which hovers over the water – for you to enjoy your drinks in the sunshine, or use as a private space on which to catch some rays.

Upstairs is the incredible master bedroom with epic views from the huge apex window. The en suite bathroom with copper roll top bath and separate shower complete this luxurious en suite bedroom.

The second bedroom is tastefully decorated and has an en suite shower room. For the kids (over 10’s only in Cottles Quay), there is a ladder up to a mezzanine level where they can find a television and toys – heaven!

The outside courtyard area gives access to multiple seating areas, the slipway and the boathouse. Transformed from an old boat store into an amphibious house, the boathouse is the only one of its kind in Devon and Cornwall. The house sits on ‘dolphins’ within a huge hole and the small gap around the house can fill up with sea water to lift the house up. 

Just like the main house, the boathouse is seriously cool with industrial-style concrete and timbers which are softened with brilliant touches of colour, modern artwork and carefully considered fabrics.

Walking in at ground level, the open plan kitchen, high dining table and comfortable seating area is a great place to socialise. The kitchen has all mod cons including the ever important Nespresso machine. The glass surrounding the dining area can slide back to give maximum light and easy access to the courtyard. We love that there is no upright in the corner to block your view!

Leading off from the living area there are two equally sized bedrooms, both with a double bed, stylish interiors and a velux window above.

Downstairs in the basement is a large shower room plus the cinema room. Put your feet up and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbuster in total luxury.

With regret, Cottles Quay is unsuitable for under 10’s. No smoking inside. A dog may be allowed at the discretion of the owners.
