Until around 100 years ago Salcombe earned most of its living through the estuary and the sea.
Since the 1960’s Salcombe has developed into a popular visitor destination humming with holiday homes and people enjoying the wonderful sandy beaches and balmy climate.
Fishing, ship building and boat building has declined but crab fishing remains an integral part of Salcombe’s history and the crab and lobster caught along the rugged coast has always had a fine reputation.
Most of the crab caught from our Devon waters finds itself abroad in the restaurants of our continental neighbours and a slim minority in fine London restaurants. In fact most of the 17,000 tonnes of crab landed in the UK are exported live to Spain and France. We at Salcombe Finest want this wonderful food to be accessed and enjoyed by all of us here in the UK.
